Meet Marteen Longo, our featured volunteer from Miami!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I volunteer at Joe DiMaggio Childrens’ Hospital

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? One year

Are you a Volunteer Guide or Volunteer Musician? Guide

What is your occupation outside of MOC? Retired School Administrator

Do you have any hidden talents? Not only not “hidden” but really none at all. I do read a novel fast if that counts.

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I sang, not very well, old songs to my grandchildren and saw their joy hearing it. The youngest, now 9, still asks me to sing certain songs. Hopefully, my poor vocalization hasn’t spoiled his musical ear!!

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? Smiles and thank yous from parents as well as patients make me feel special for being a small part of their pleasurable experience. It is just so enjoyable!

Has your life changed because of your experience with MOC? I have been pleasantly surprised with the musicians who give so easily of their time. This has made me realize that volunteering, no matter age, gender, occupation, etc. is so rewarding.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? There has been many. One of which is when the young patient, about 5, ran up and hugged the singer. He did it so quickly and without a word it stunned us all. I really don’t think he wanted us to leave!!
