Meet Dorothy Matheson, Our Featured Volunteer from Miami!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I volunteer at South Miami Hospital.

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? I have been volunteering for 14 months.

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Guide

What is your occupation outside of MOC? I’m a retired teacher of English as a Second Language.

Do you have any hidden talents? I can wiggle my ears, even one at a time!!!

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC?  I have always enjoyed music and its power to soothe and generate emotions. As a guide for MOC I am able to witness the effects of this power first hand. And, I get to enjoy first-rate live music!

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? Before volunteering with MOC, I was in charge of the hospital book cart. I had contact with the patients, just as I do now. However, what I offered the patients was books & magazines, as opposed to music.

Has your life changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? My experience with MOC has enhanced my life tremendously. I look forward to the times I guide and the opportunity to witness how much the patients appreciate the music.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? This is a tough question because I honestly have favorite moments after each time I guide. The most rewarding experiences are the times the music brings tears to a patient. Whether they be tears of joy or tears of sadness, I am witnessing the healthy power of music that allows people to release their pent up emotions. And I experience this phenomenon every time I guide.
