Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? Ochsner Medical Center

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? About a year

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Guide

What is your occupation outside of MOC? I am a retired social worker

Do you have any hidden talents? Not really, but I do love playing the piano and guitar and also writing songs

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I grew up in a very musical family. My father was a wonderful piano player and my mother loved to sing. Family dinners would often end up around the piano with everyone singing and joining in. I have 5 sisters and 2 brothers and everyone plays an instrument and sings. Music to me can be magical. It can turn a sour mood into joy in an instant. I volunteer with MOC because it’s a worthwhile cause that does bring joy to those dealing with hard times. It lifts me up as well to see the smiles and responses we get when a patient is exposed to beautiful music at their bedside.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? I like the direct interaction with patients and seeing their reaction to the performances. They are always so appreciative.

Has your life changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? I will say that no matter my mood when I go to volunteer, I even feel better after. I go to volunteer, it is always much better after I’m done. It makes you appreciate life more.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? An elderly man was in his room with his family and he requested that the violinist play”Amazing Grace.” The tears began to stream down his face while the song was played. It was a beautiful moment that I have always remembered. They were all very thankful and so was I.
