Meet Andrew Plan, Our Featured Volunteer from Dallas!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I volunteer at Children’s Health

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? I have been volunteering for one year

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? Pharrell, “Happy”

Have you ever been part of an impromptu jam session with patients or family in a hospital room? Yes! It’s so awesome when patients and family join in, singing and grooving along.

Do you perform anywhere else besides with MOC? I host an open mic every Saturday at the Balcony Club in Lakewood.

What is your occupation outside of MOC? I’m the lead web developer at a local startup

Do you have any hidden talents? Not that I know of…I guess they’re hidden from me too 🙂

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? All my life I’ve been driven by a desire to bring healing to others. When I was growing up, I thought I was going to be a doctor, and even took all the necessary courses in college. I eventually realized that being a doctor wasn’t my calling, but I still missed that sense of bringing joy and healing to other people. When I found out about Musicians On Call, I thought it was perfect for me. Music has been such a positive, healing force in my own life, and being able to share it with patients and their families through Musicians On Call has really brought things full circle for me.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? The fact that it’s centered around music as a service to others, which is such a powerful concept. Being a volunteer with MOC really drove home for me how music can impact people’s lives for the better, and that’s definitely influenced how I approach my career as an artist.

Has your life changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? Yes!

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? During one visit to Children’s Health, every single patient, family member and staff person I played for wanted to hear Frozen’s “Let It Go”! It was amazing to see how one song was so beloved by so many people, and the joy the song brought those people every time I played it.
