Meet Black Bean Incident, Our Featured Volunteers from Dallas!

Get to know our volunteers!

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? We have been volunteering for 1 year!

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? Over the Rainbow

Have you ever been part of an impromptu jam session with patients or family in a hospital room? Not yet!

Do you perform anywhere else besides with MOC? Yes!

What is your occupation outside of MOC? We are one engineer, one architect, and one teacher.

Do you have any hidden talents? Yes, but if we tell you they wouldn’t be hidden anymore.

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? Musicians from our youth, we particularly enjoy performing acoustically. We hear each other well so we harmonize better & the resulting sound is more enjoyable. We volunteer for patients because they are so appreciative – and they are a captive audience, they can’t leave and there are not too many things they can throw at us.

Sometimes we give them one of their final memorable moments with their loved ones & sometimes we just brighten their day a bit. But we get great satisfaction making even the slightest difference.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? Comradery with a lot of other good musicians.

Has your life changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? We always enjoy performing but doing so for patients is just different, more rewarding. One unexpected byproduct is a more keen awareness of our personal health.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? When we move someone to tears or to laughter we know that we’ve given them a reason to be emotional in a way other than being afraid.
