What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? “Music is the ultimate universal healer. There is nothing that can replace the feeling you get when you see a smile from ear to ear on a child (or any patient for that matter) who is fighting for their life. Music does that for these patients. It gives them a 5-minute break from all of the pain and suffering they face on a daily basis to just enjoy a song. It’s life-changing and incredibly rewarding. I volunteer with MOC because it keeps my perspective in check and teaches me to stop complaining about things that don’t matter. There is so much more to enjoy in life. “
Has your life changed because of your experience with MOC? “YES! It’s an ongoing effort, but it reminds me of what really matters in life, and how to stop myself from seeing the bad and look for the good. At the end of the day, it reminds me of just how blessed I am to be alive and healthy. ”
What is your favorite #MOCmoment? “My favorite #MOCmoment occurred recently. There was a young boy, about 8 years old who was battling cancer and was feeling especially down. The hospital staff explained that they weren’t sure he would be up for a song, but we’d try anyway. Well, that little boy not only accepted our song but was moving and dancing his weak little body the whole time with a big smile on his face. His dad, who was present in the room, was so grateful. It’s moments like those that make it all worthwhile — it’s moments like those that make the hour and a half drive down to Miami (each way) in traffic seem so short and easy 🙂.“
