Meet Charles Absher, our featured volunteer from Atlanta!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I volunteer at Atlanta VA Hospital

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? About four months

Are you a Volunteer Guide or Volunteer Musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? I think it is Dock on the Bay.

Have you ever been part of an impromptu jam session with patients or family in a hospital room? A couple of patients have used impromptu percussion. Several others have sung along.

Do you perform anywhere else besides with MOC? Yes, I have gigs where I solo or have accompaniment. I also help to lead music most Monday evenings at Metro Taize services.

What is your occupation outside of MOC? I am a Civil Engineer

Do you have any hidden talents? What you see and hear is what you get.

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I love to play and write music. It is a creative release for me and relaxes me. I volunteer with MOC because people love music and I am pretty good at presenting it to them, and eliciting some participation. And I think I can make them feel good. Music does that for people.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? This has been more one-on-one. My other volunteer experiences were with large groups. But MOC allows you to connect directly with a patient.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? So far, it has been playing Big Yellow Taxi for someone who requested it.
