Meet Joe Tunon, Our Featured Volunteer from Miami!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I volunteer at Holtz Children’s and South Miami Hospital

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? 6 Months

Are you a Volunteer Guide or Volunteer Musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? “Guantanamera” for the Spanish patients

Have you ever been part of an impromptu jam session with patients or family in a hospital room? Yes! One little boy had a toy keyboard that he pounded away on during a rousing “Sweet Home Alabama”!

Do you perform anywhere else besides with MOC? Various churches and charities and one prison

What is your occupation outside of MOC? Server Engineer

Do you have any hidden talents? Public speaking / presentations

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? For years I alternated between teaching the Bible and playing acoustic rock gigs. I eventually combined my faith and music, and found how to give back by playing for people who need it the most.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? Most of my volunteer experiences are solo initiatives. With MOC I feel like I’m part of a big, beautiful, giving community.

Has your life changed because of your experience with MOC?  No question. The power of music is unlike anything else in the world.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? Impossible. Every time a patient says yes it becomes my favorite MOC moment.
