Meet Katie Dundas, Our Featured Volunteer from Dallas!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I volunteer at UT Southwestern/Children’s Medical

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? I have been volunteering for a year and a half

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? The Bones – Maren Morris

Have you ever been part of an impromptu jam session with patients or family in a hospital room? Yes!

Do you perform anywhere else besides with MOC? Occasionally I do open mics around the Dallas area!

What is your occupation outside of MOC? I work for a marketing firm as Director of Content & Community.

Do you have any hidden talents? No, but I make some mean breakfast tacos!

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I first heard about MOC through a podcast episode featuring Rachel Platten. Rachel spoke about her experience volunteering for MOC in New York before she took off as an artist, and it immediately resonated with me. I have been passionate about singing and songwriting my entire life as well as helping/connecting with others, so MOC was the perfect combination of the two.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? I did hospice volunteering in college, but I feel like MOC is different because music is so universally healing no matter who you are, what language you speak, or what your situation is. It’s just the best.

Has your life changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? Absolutely. I leave every volunteering session feeling grateful for the opportunity to connect with others and especially grateful for my own life.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? A few months ago I was volunteering at UT Southwestern, and their chaplain was checked in as a patient due to an injury. We visited his room and sang “How He Loves,” a song I used to sing when I held worship in high school, and it was such a beautiful moment. The room was filled with peace and love, and I was so glad to be able to give back to someone who gives so much to UT Southwestern on a regular basis!
