Meet Liz Shaw, Our Featured Volunteer from WXPN Philly!

Get to know our volunteers!

What Virtual Program do you volunteer with? I volunteer for the WXPN Philadelphia adult patient program.

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? I think I’ve been volunteering for 12 years?

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Guide

What is your occupation outside of MOC? I’m happily retired!

Do you have any hidden talents? Parking Karma (I can find the best parking spot in any lot!)

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? My connection began as a young child. I was introduced to jazz through my Dad and his trumpet and opera by my Mom. And it wasn’t uncommon for a song to break out at family gatherings! At school, chorus and musicals were activities I enjoyed most. These days you may hear me join in harmony with the musicians during a MOC session. Always great fun!

I volunteer because I believe strongly in the healing power of music. It’s is a way for me to play a small part. I’ve seen patients and family members transform in a matter of minutes. On my ride home I think of the people I met that night and maybe, for a few minutes, their spirits were lifted through music. Rock on!
