Meet Ray Johnston, Our Featured Volunteer from Dallas!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I like playing at all hospitals but since I live in Dallas, I volunteer at Children’s Dallas & UTSW the most.

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? Almost 2 years

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? A song of mine, “Beautiful You”

Have you been a part of an impromptu jam session? Oh Yeah! Love that.

Do you perform anywhere else besides MOC? My band Ray Johnston Band performs 100 plus dates per year.

Do you have any hidden talents? I am an underrated ping pong player & know every state capital.

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I am a five time survivor of leukemia. I got to meet my bone marrow donor. The nurses, techs, Drs were an integral part of me making it through my battles. My brand of my music is NO BAD DAYS. As a Christian, I feel God led me to MOC and the power of a song and music is so strong with patients, families, and hospital staff.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? Consistent. The guide does all the admin I would stink at, and it’s organized.

Has you live changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? Yes. Serving others is what life is about. So many were there for me during my battles and its my time to lift up others through MOC.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? A parent of a patient telling the guide and I how much it meant for me to play a song(s) for their child.
