Meet Wally Levis, Our Featured Volunteer from NYC!

Get to know our volunteers!

What Virtual Program do you volunteer with? Before covid, I played many of the Manhattan hospitals and Montefiore in the Bronx. I also have played the Virtual Self Care program both before and during covid.

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? I’ve been volunteering since 1999!

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? So many wonderful songs out there! My favorite song is whatever one happens to be “just right” for the listener. My repertoire is what I call “Jazz Standards, Folk Classics, and Pop Favorites.”

Which demographic do you love playing for and why? I really love playing for all ages. My biggest fan is a 3-year-old here in the Bronx. Whenever I have a public gig—farmer’s market, art opening, that type—she shows up and sits right in front on a little blue chair.

Do you have any livestreams or other performances coming up? I have many upcoming performances with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY), but they are private.

What is your occupation outside of MOC? I teach and write.

Do you have any hidden talents? Nothing hidden: my background is in journalism. https://www.walterblevis.com/

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? My mother taught music. I grew up with music. I volunteer because I believe—really believe—in the healing power of music. Very grateful for all you do to make sharing the music possible. Many thanks to everyone at MOC.
