Meet Andy Cale, Our Featured Volunteer from New Orleans!

Get to know our volunteers!

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? I volunteer at Ochsner Hospital and University Medical Center

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? 6 months

Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Musician

What is your favorite song to play for patients? “I’ve Just Seen a Face” by The Beatles

Have you been a part of an impromptu jam session? That’s the best: when patients, family and volunteers all join in.

Do you perform anywhere else besides MOC? Special events, such as weddings.

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I was brought up in a musical family, but seeing the Beatles on TV really hooked me. Since I have experience performing solo, I felt volunteering for MOC would be rewarding. It has absolutely exceeded all expectations.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? It’s an ideal match. To play some songs and see patients smile and sing is a thrill.

Has you live changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? Yes, I have a heightened awareness of the positive effect music has on those stricken with illness.

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? A family in the NICU asked me to play for their tiny neonatal baby. The dad asked for a Dylan tune. I picked a gentle one and the baby seemed to react in a hythmic manner. The family members as well as myself were all in that moment together.
