Meet Barry Goldstein, Our Featured Volunteer from Philadelphia!
Get to know our volunteers!
How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? I have been volunteering for almost 10 years!
Are you a volunteer guide or musician? Musician
What is your favorite song to play for patients? I Can See Clearly Now
Have you ever been part of an impromptu jam session with patients or family in a hospital room? Yes, a number of times!
Do you perform anywhere else besides with MOC? Anywhere and everywhere!
What is your occupation outside of MOC? I am a retired School Counselor who has worked at all levels of schools in the city.
Do you have any hidden talents? I try to work all my talents through music – nylon acoustic-electric guitar, singing, percussion, and dance.
What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I got emotionally connected to music as a young child, attracted to the rhythms of Gospel, Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll Music. I taught myself all that I know and I now enjoy sharing this thrill with interested hospital patients through the amazing people associated with MOC. MOC is a well thought out, supportive organization of the highest caliber – well trained, caring, and dedicated workers and volunteers who provide a critically important service to patients in hospitals. I am delighted and honored to be part of this team!
What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? I see the amazing effect I can have on patients each and every time I volunteer – the smiles, tears, and gratitude. It’s a unique, wonderful experience for me.
Has your life changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? It has. I have become less self-centered and more caring, I believe.
What is your favorite #MOCmoment? So, so many. One that does stand out was the reaction I received from a severely mentally and physically impaired teenager last week at Children’s Hospital here in Philadelphia. He was somehow able to communicate his joy for the music through his movement and smiles.
