What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? Throughout college, I tutored children who were patients at a local hospital so they could continue their academic development and studies while undergoing medical treatment. I also volunteered at an outpatient children’s clinic, where I played games with patients while they waited for their appointments. The patients I met during these experiences were incredibly inspiring, and I decided quickly that I wanted to become involved with an organization that infused joy into the lives of patients. I discovered Musicians on Call while researching summer internship opportunities back in 2001(!), and the rest is history. I had an amazing time interning with MOC in New York City, and knew that if given the chance, I would love to remain involved with MOC. Fast-forward to 2014, and my wish came true because I was able to start being a guide with MOC at Children’s National in Washington, DC.
What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you’ve brightened up a patient’s life.
Has your life changed because of your experience with Musicians On Call? I can’t imagine my life without MOC! Each program is incredibly rewarding. I feel very fortunate that through my role as a guide, I can see MOC’s extremely talented musicians bring joy to patients.
What is your favorite #MOCmoment? It’s really hard to pick one because each MOC performance is special!
I’ve been a guide for a few performances where the patient may seem to be nonresponsive to the music, but then I see the patient crack a smile, tap a finger, or wiggle a toe, and I know that I’ve just witnessed the power of music!
