Name: Laurie Farmer

Branch: Nashville and Atlanta

Do you volunteer at a specific hospital? Alive Hospice in Nashville and VA hospital in Atlanta

How long have you been volunteering with Musicians On Call? Since Sept of 2013 I believe — 3+ years

Are you a Volunteer Guide or Volunteer Musician? Guide

What is your occupation outside of MOC? Mom, Manager, Marketer

Do you have any hidden talents? Not-so-hidden — singer on Praise Team at church and Arabian horse owner & rider.

What is your story? What connects you with music and why do you volunteer with MOC? I’m a huge country music fan, grew up listening to the greats (George, Ronnie, Dolly and Glen) and love modern country music/radio as well. Mom of musician (Belmont grad) who re-introduced me to Nashville four years ago. Felt a calling to respond to radio ad for MOC! The rest is history. I like making things happen and making a difference! I believe that if you can use your unique gifts to fill a void in this world, even in the smallest of spaces, that is where true joy is found.

What makes MOC different from your other volunteer experiences? It beautifully combines my love of music & making someone’s day a little brighter.

Has your life changed because of your experience with MOC? Absolutely! It is richer!

What is your favorite #MOCmoment? It’s tough to just mention one MOC moment! Perhaps when Amazing Grace was sung with several loved ones surrounding the bed of a hospice patient who was in her final hours. Or when we played and sang for a deserving veteran whose sister said he refused to eat. Yet when we made him smile with song he became so entertained and engaged that he unknowingly took several bites of his dinner and forgot that he was refusing! Or maybe when a young husband ran down the hall to repeatedly thank us for being the reason his non-responsive bride smiled and spoke for the first time in days. Honestly, I get choked up just reflecting on moments like these. Too many to list. Too inevitably beautiful to forget.
